Tri State Smoothies

We are having a day off today. Well, kind of. Macy and Stuart are home from school. Their little coughs and runny noses have turned into an up-all-night-being-miserable TERRIBLE cough. Grady made the call to keep them home this morning. We are completely out of cereal, and the kids think that breakfast no longer exists without it. ha..ha..ha. I made a smoothie out of some of the goodies we had around here, hoping that the extra vitamins will help them fight off the sickies.

They look and taste super yummy, but the recipe will make you think twice about trying them. Here's what we used:

* Colorado peaches (delivered to Nana & Popi this past weekend...and we scored a box!)

*Washington cherries (brought home and canned last summer by none other than... US!)

*Wyoming cherry tomatoes (fresh out of nana's garden)

Sounds yucky, so I had the kids drink theirs before I would answer their question on what was in it. The tomatoes are coming out of our ears right now, and are loaded with good stuff to help these poor baby bodies, so I threw a few in the blender. I had a jar of cherries opened, but Grady doesn't care for them and I couldn't bring myself to try them. They just did not look good to me. The kids love them, but I needed the jar to can those peaches today.

By the looks of these faces, I would say that my experiemental recipe was a successful one. Thinking about it now, I could have added the 1 1/2 bananas that we have left, but will save them for another smoothie later. The kids dig these things, and I just don't make them enough, so why not spoil them while they're home sick and hating me for not taking them to school. If this happens again, I will give SERIOUS consideration to making Grady take a sick day too. It's not easy keeping kids home and expecting them to lie around to rest when the weather is in the upper 70s, sun shining, and they feel fine other than a bit of hacking here and there, and the need for a kleenex every once in a while.

Well, that's our day so far. We have a dental appointment this afternoon for the two older ones, and they are so excited for that. It's a chance to get out of this house! I will be doing some of the necessary shopping this evening to stock that cereal back up, and may take a detour to the Kohl's store that just opened today. They sent us a $10 gift card to use in the next two weeks, so I should at least to check it out....right?

Here's to hoping that no one else has a lingering bout of sickies running through their home.

Smoothies sounds so good right now! Your receipe was interesting, but sounds very good. Never thought of using tomatoes. I have some in the fridge so I might have to try that! I hope that the kiddo's are getting better. Being sick is no fun.

Boy, you guys just can't catch a break in the sick department, eh?

I never thought of throwing tomatoes in there...can you taste it?? I throw raw spinach in smoothies all the time (the uncooked lettuce-kind, not the cooked up, frozen Popeye kind!)- you can see it, but you can't taste it and it gives you loads of good stuff! A really good one is a handful of frozen strawberries, a cup or two of the spinach, a banana and some rice or soy milk (regular milk tastes weird...juice works, too, though). I want to go make one right now!
