Recession??

I've been reading tons about the economy taking a turn towards a recession. Has anyone else heard this?

I have been really trying to stock up on food storage and the necessities (toilet paper, toothpaste, soaps) and have been really trying to make healthier meals for us. There are times that it is so easy just to make the kids a corndog, ramen noodles, or mac and cheese. I've started cutting veggies into thin slices and adding them to the noodles and have been making homemade mac and cheese (thanks, Nana, for the "show-me-how"). I've searched the internet for recipes that I can make with what I have onhand. I can actually say that we have not been food shopping as much this month as the past few months. I liked how we only shopped once a month while in Wyoming, and am trying very hard to make that possible again. Although the temptations are hard to battle, I may be making some slow progress. With the doctor bills still coming in, I am trying my hardest to be frugal. I run the house all day shutting lights off that are not being used. I only run the dishwasher when I can not fit another knife in it. I've successfully made four loaves of bread from scratch (including the griding of wheat...although that uses electricity, so maybe not a money saver, but we eat toast for breakfast and eat it fresh as a snack).

Well, I will continue to rack my brain for some frugal living, but would love to hear anyone else's ideas on it.

Hey - if you have a good recipe for homemade mac and cheese I'd LOVE to hear it!!

We will be re-stocking our food storage this spring and summer. We still have a lot of wheat, etc. left - but have blown through our food storage in the past 4-6 months. On the plus side, when you have a good storage, you can get away with only spending like $100-150 on perishables and still have have a pretty normal diet.

I'm also turning off lights (we're going to use the new low-energy spiral bulbs - whatever they're called - in the new house...I have ONE in place here, lol) and only running full loads of dishes and laundry...although I can't imagine having a NOT full load of either of those around here! Luckily the new washer/dryers we both just got should help with that! I'm really hoping my computer doesn't use too much power...cuz I can't survive Ten Sleep without having it on all the time for quick reference and email!

I have a whole binder of food-storage recipes...we'll have to compare the ones we have and swap!

Our biggest hope for frugality this year is to plant a huge garden and get some fruit trees started. I like the self-sufficiency! We're also going to invest in a wood burning stove soon so we have power not dependent on "the man", haha:)

Keep us posted of any more ideas you come up with!

Those bulbs are CFL, but you should read up on what to do if one breaks. We, just like you, are using them. However, just be very careful. They can be dangerous if broken, especially with children. I just hope that we don't break one during the cold winter months.

I'm the worst to ask about this. I love a bright house and all my lights are normally on and that probably is because of all the darkness here. Sorry that I'm no help on this one.

Sandy-The mac and cheese recipe isn't a gourmet one that you bake, but we eat it up tons. We cook our noodles like normal (and add cut up hotdogs if we want). Then, we add shredded sharp cheddar cheese (or the mexican blend from Costco), butter and milk. Stir up and enjoy. We top ours with bacon bits sometimes. It can be stringy sometimes, but it is eaten up all the same.
